I wanted this project to not only include some of my own songs, but to be a reflection of the music and musicians who have influenced me, inspired me and brought me to where I am in this moment. I wanted to vary the arrangements with smaller groups to make each song just a little different. I feel we have accomplished that, and I am grateful beyond words to everyone involved.; to my incredibly talented fellow band members, to the many guest musicians, including Peter Rowan, Jim Lauderdale, Joe Craven, Byron House, Verlon Thompson, John Mailander, Del Suggs and many others, and to the friends who supported the project and who encourage my music..... the ground beneath my feet!

I'm especially happy with this recording. It was an absolute thrill to work with Darol Anger again. The songs he arranged,, I think, are among the stand-outs. Other collaborations were equally satisfying -- Byron House, Joe Craven, Gabe Valla, Lis and Lon Williamson, Del Suggs and more, plus our talented band members and engineer. It was a little scary to do a recording of mostly my songs, but everyone was encouraging, and the response has been great. Rounding out the material are some of my favorite traditional songs and two perfectly complimentary cover songs by Steve Winwood and Cold Play.

I loved the way this recording came together. The band really clicked with everything, and this was the beginning of our collaborations with Darol Anger and Byron House. The arrangements, especially of the traditional material, were really fun and challenging. The sound is more acoustic and more cohesive than ever, but there's still a lot of variety, from bluegrass to blues to ragtime to Dylan, and as always, a beautiful instrumental composition by Arvid Smith. -- Lee

WIND HORSES
Binky Records, 2002
This recording marked the beginning of inspiring collaborations with Lis and Lon Williamson, Del Suggs and others, and most importantly with engineer, Pete Winter, at Winterstone Productions. We used a full and talented band on most of it for a richer, more Americana sound. Arvid's guitar playing stands out-acoustic, electric, slide, fingerstyle and sonic effects on material that ranges from world music to the Civil War, from medieval France to the seals of Ireland. Stylistically, it's all over the place, but somehow, it makes perfect sense! Let us know!
